Robox PACs (Programmable Automation Controller) are designed to provide an open, scalable, and high-performance platform for industrial automation, axis control, and motion management.
Thanks to the integration of EtherCAT master and CANopen master controls into a single platform, scalable and modular solutions can be developed for both stand-alone machines and distributed lines, with the ability to manage up to 32 axes. The use of open standards also ensures freedom in selecting suppliers and managing procurement over time.
Each Robox axis controller has been designed to handle complex operations and make the most of distributed electronics such as servo drives and I/O expansion modules, using the integrated AXIOLINE connection. In addition, the application software developed through the RDE development environment is compatible with the entire RP family, promoting the reuse of application logic and ensuring continuity across different projects and platforms.
Motion controller Robox
RP-3
It represents the top of the range and is designed to meet the most demanding computing requirements in industrial automation and robotics. It provides up to 10 times more computing power than the RP-2, enabling the management of advanced algorithms, complex kinematics, and applications requiring high real-time performance.
The RP-3 allows the full performance of the EtherCAT fieldbus to be leveraged, achieving data exchange rates of up to 2 kHz, equivalent to 500 μs.
RP-2
Designed for use in extremely demanding applications with a high number of axes to control, it allows the full performance of the EtherCAT fieldbus to be leveraged, with data exchange frequencies of up to 1 kHz (1 ms). The WI-FI connection enables access to the integrated web server from any smartphone. In addition, the WAN port makes interfacing with the factory network easy and aligned with INDUSTRY 4.0 technologies. In the Bus slave version (AS1018.012), it can also be connected to an EtherCAT and Profinet network.
uRP-2 (micro RP-2)
In just 55x80x34 mm and with an overall volume of almost 1/7 of its larger counterpart (RP-2), it represents a milestone in miniaturization, without compromising computing power. It can be used in extremely demanding applications with a high number of axes to control. It allows the full performance of the EtherCAT fieldbus to be leveraged, achieving a cyclic data exchange frequency of 2 kHz (500 μs). Thanks to the integration of an Ethernet switch with 4 externally available ports, it ensures maximum connectivity without the need for additional components.
RP-1
RP-1 is the most versatile motion controller in the Robox range, suitable for most industrial automation applications. Even with a high number of axes, it enables data exchange frequencies of up to 500 Hz (2 ms), offering an effective balance between performance, flexibility, and ease of integration.
RP-0
Used in more complex applications, but with a limited number of axes to control. It allows the full performance of the EtherCAT fieldbus to be leveraged, with data exchange frequencies of up to 1 kHz (1000 μs).
SI-uPAC (SI-microPAC)
Axis control board mounted directly on Digitax HD M753 drives, without the need for additional external hardware. It is a compact solution for integrating axis control functions directly into the drive, simplifying the machine architecture and reducing footprint and wiring.
Main application areas
Robox PACs are used in a wide range of industrial machines and plants, from compact solutions to more complex and structured systems. Thanks to their ability to manage from 2 up to 32 axes in a synchronized and scalable manner, they are used in:
- Robotic systems and automatic machines for welding, assembly, cutting, pick & place, palletizing, and painting operations,
- Machine tools and telemanipulators,
- Plants and lines dedicated to various industrial sectors, including packaging, food, wood, marble, glass, textile, paper, and printing,
- Automated warehouses, handling systems, and automated guided vehicles (AGVs).
Implementable architectures
Communication towards the upper level
Robox controllers can communicate with supervision systems, PLCs, SCADA systems, and factory networks via industrial protocols such as:
ProfiNET, Profibus, OPC-UA, TCP/IP, Microsoft.NET, Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, ModbusTCP, ActiveX, UDP/IP.
RDE development environment
Robox Axis Controllers work in synergy with RDE, the development environment designed to configure, program, monitor, and commission motion control applications in an integrated way. Developed together with the hardware, RDE ensures complete consistency between controller, software, diagnostics, and debugging tools, reducing development complexity and simplifying integration into machine systems. This results in a more controllable, flexible platform, optimized to make the most of the performance of Robox PACs.
Robox know-how at the service of motion control
Robox Motion Controllers are the result of over 50 years of experience in industrial automation, motion control, and the development of electronics and software for high-performance applications.
From the first solutions dedicated to debugging and control through to the PAC families, Robox has built up vertical expertise over time in the design of axis control units. This evolution is reflected in a range developed over the years through different platforms and configurations, from RBXE and RBXC controllers to the RMC, RMC2, RMC4, and µRMC series.
This specialization allows us to gain an in-depth understanding of the needs of machine builders and system integrators, developing controllers that are reliable, scalable, and durable over time. Every design choice, from the integration of EtherCAT master controls to synchronized axis management, is the result of years of field experience and a deep knowledge of industrial motion control dynamics.
Thanks to this know-how, Robox offers PACs designed to adapt to different machine architectures and ensure design continuity, precision, high performance, and long-term reliability.
FAQ
What is the difference between a PAC and a PLC?
PACs offer greater flexibility, computing power, and integration capabilities than traditional PLCs. They are ideal for applications requiring advanced motion control, data management, HMI interfaces, and communication with IT systems.
Are Robox PACs compatible with other automation systems?
Yes, Robox Programmable Automation Controllers support standard protocols such as Modbus, CANopen, EtherCAT, and OPC UA, ensuring high interoperability with other industrial devices and systems.
How do you choose the best Programmable Automation Controller for industrial applications?
The choice of the best Programmable Automation Controller depends on:
- number of axes to be controlled;
- application complexity;
- required data exchange frequency;
- available space inside the cabinet or machine;
- level of integration with fieldbuses and distributed architectures.
Based on these requirements, the Robox range makes it possible to identify the most suitable controller for each application:
- RP-3 is suitable for highly complex industrial and robotic applications where high computing power, management of advanced algorithms, complex kinematics, and precise synchronization of multiple axes are required.
- RP-2 is suitable for motion control applications with a high number of axes and very fast machine cycles. It is ideal for automatic machines and production lines.
- µRP-2 is designed for compact applications requiring high performance in limited spaces. It is suitable for machines with restricted footprint, modular systems, and decentralized solutions requiring integrated connectivity (e.g. humanoids).
- RP-1 is the most versatile solution for most industrial applications, such as automatic machines, handling systems, packaging, assembly, and axis control with intermediate performance requirements.
- RP-0 is suitable for compact or less extensive applications, with a limited number of axes but requiring precision and real-time control, such as small automatic machines, test benches, positioning systems, and stand-alone units.
- SI-uPAC is suitable when axis control needs to be integrated directly into the drive, reducing external hardware, wiring, and footprint, particularly in compact architectures based Digitax HD M753.
